About Shelby

  • Shelby belongs to Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation in Treaty 8, Alberta. She grew up on a small farm by Sturgeon Lake and moved to Fort McMurray in 2014.

  • Shelby has a Bachelor of Commerce from MacEwan University and worked in human resources and Indigenous employment/training.

  • In 2021 she completed the 13 Moon Journey into Indigenous Birthwork Mentorship held by Kihew Awasis Wakamik (previously called Indigenous Birth Alberta).

  • Shelby is a co-founder and board member of Ihkapaskwa Indigenous Wellness Collective, a non-profit run by Indigenous care providers to offer culturally safe support, education, and programming to Indigenous families. Shelby is a co-founder alongside two incredible Indigenous Community members who have taken on the majority of the non-profit organization operations while she focuses on her studies.

  • In 2018 Shelby began attending therapy, which inspired her to begin her Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology at Yorkville University in 2020. Some of the methodologies Shelby has learned about and is interested in using with clients are person-centred therapy, narrative therapy, strengths-based counselling, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Rational Emotive Behavioural Therapy (REBT), and Existential Therapy. Shelby looks forward to integrating these styles of counselling into her relationship-based approach to working with clients.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor of Commerce - MacEwan University

  • Current Student - Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology- Yorkville University

  • As a practicum student, Shelby will be under the supervision of the three owners of YMM Collaborative Practice: Jillian Martin R. Psych, Jocelyn Morrison, RCSW, and Shannon Young, RSW.

Rate:

  • Individual Session $50/ Hour

  • Free session offered to Metis Individuals and individuals who are members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community
