Our child and youth therapists are here to provide compassionate, age-appropriate services to help you find balance and healing during this significant time in your life.

Fact About Child & Youth

When it comes to mental illness, youth is a critical period, Most people living with a mental illness see their symptoms begin before age 18.

In Canada, it is estimated that 1.2 million youth experience mental illness.

Together, we can help your child or youth build resilience, improve their emotional well-being, and develop the skills they need for a healthier, more balanced life.

Our child and youth therapists are skilled at creating a comfortable, non-judgmental space where children and youths can express themselves freely.

We build trust with each individual by respecting their pace and needs. Therapy for children and youths is tailored to their developmental stage.

FOR YOUNGER CHILDREN...

This often means incorporating play or art, to help them express feelings and process difficult emotions.

FOR YOUTHS...

Therapy may focus more on conversation, skill-building, and coping strategies that can help them navigate stress, relationships, and mental health concerns.

We also use art therapy, which can be used at any age and is  a wonderful way of expressing and processing emotions.

Therapy helps children and youths understand the root causes of their emotions and behaviors, and provides them with tools to manage and cope effectively.

Therapy can also support children and youths in improving their relationships with peers, family members, and authority figures.

We understand that children’s well-being is deeply connected to the family system. Our therapists work collaboratively with parents and caregivers to ensure that the child’s progress is supported at home and in other settings.

How It Works

CHILDREN

A typical therapy session with children involves the child engaging in various play activities, such as art, puppet play, sand tray play, movement and other toys. As the child engages in Play, the therapist observes closely, noticing patterns, themes, and behaviours that may indicate underlying emotional challenges. The therapist might gently intervene by asking questions or guiding the child through certain scenarios to help them explore and process their feelings.

Sessions are typically 50 minutes, with 40 minutes of active play or art therapy and 10 minutes to provide feedback and strategies with the parent.

Parents are asked to attend the initial intake assessment without the child and routinely attend parent consultation sessions to provide feedback, discuss the child’s needs and progress, and provide suggestions to help the child succeed at home, school, and in the community.

YOUTH

A typical therapy session with youths involves developing rapport and outlining challenges the youth has been facing. The therapist will use different techniques to explore emotions, thoughts and behaviours they have been struggling with and aim to develop a treatment plan through this process.

Sessions are typically 50 minutes, with 50 minutes of face to face interaction and 10 minutes following it to document the session and plan for follow up.

Parents are asked to attend the initial intake assessment and routinely attend parent consultation sessions to provide feedback, discuss the youth's needs and progress, and provide suggestions to help the youth succeed at home, school, and in the community. Parent or family follow up sessions are available upon request with the therapist.
